DIY: How to Tone Your Hair at Home

Why is being a blonde so high maintenance? The first time you get your hair done you look like BEYONCE but a few weeks later your hair is yellow. I’ve been blonde for seven years and my hair has gone through every color from orange to banana yellow… ya I said banana yellow. (Spring break 2016, stalk me on fb.) I’ve tried Shimmer Lights purple shampoo before in the past and I’d use it once or twice a week but I never saw a difference in my hair. It was still yellow and going to get my hair toned every few weeks was becoming an expense. If you know hair, you know that toner only lasts a few weeks but if you wash your hair every day like me it lasts like two days. Okay, DRAAAAMATIC but you know what I mean. I’m so glad I found this method to tone my hair because it’s made my life so much easier, especially for you college girls that go out like every day and don’t ever have the time to get your hair done. This is your hair care holy grail. Let me know if any of you guys try this!

Some of the things you need:
1. White conditioner
This is the one I used –
OGX Conditioner, Nourishing Coconut Milk, 13oz
2. Manic Panic purple hair dye
Manic Panic Purple Haze
3. A container
4. Something to mix it with. (plastic spoon)
5. Latex gloves (it stains)
6. An old shirt you don’t care about
7. A comb

These are the two products I used.

I poured the conditioner into the container and added half a spoon full of the purple manic panic hair dye. The white conditioner is used to dilute the purple hair dye so it’s supposed to come out to a light purple color after you mix it.

Okay, I definitely added a little more than half a spoonful so I added more conditioner on top until it turned lighter.

This stuff stains so be careful. If you look closely at my shirt you could see the stain by the back of my neck. It also turns your hands and nails purple so please make sure to use a latex glove. I left this stuff in for about 15 minutes. Sometimes I’ll do 20 minutes at most. It’s really up to you how long you want to keep it in, but be careful because if you leave it in for too long it will turn your hair purple. I’ve had it happen to me a couple times and believe me I’ve gone out with purple hair before… Oops. Don’t worry though because it does wash off if you SCRUB IT.

So this is what my hair looked like BEFORE.

& here’s the AFTER. Bye bye brassy and HELLO BARBIE

After 15 minutes, I showered and rewashed my hair with sulfate- free shampoo and conditioner.

If you guys have any questions feel free to email/ comment!

Again, let me know if you’ve tried this and tag me if you post a picture on any social media!

*Disclaimer: I am by no means a hair professional! I use this method because it works for me. I’m sure toner, in general, isn’t very good for your hair. Going blonde is really damaging towards your hair but the main product I use, the manic panic hair dye, is based on natural vegan dyes and does not contain any harmful chemicals. That’s why I really like it.*
